Kāghaz-i Akhbār was the first periodical publication in Iran, circulating 70 years before the issuance of the Iranian Constitutional decree. This monthly publication was initiated during the reign of Muḥammad Shāh Qājār and was published in Tihrān by Mīrzā Ṣāliḥ Shīrāzī.
The inaugural issue of this periodical was released on Monday, 25 Muḥarram 1253 AH (lunar calendar), corresponding to 11 Urdībihisht 1216 (solar calendar) or 1 May 1837 CE, by the order of Muḥammad Shāh. Interestingly, this first issue didn’t have a specific name and was simply called ‘Kāghaz-i Akhbār’, a translation of the English word ‘Newspaper’.
