One of the most beneficial newspapers, which was published for a full nine years with literary and historical articles, is the Tarbiyat newspaper. This newspaper, established in Tehran under the ownership and management of “Zakāʼ al-Mulk”, has consistently been the focus of scholars’ attention due to its inclusion of useful and beneficial articles.
The first issue of Tarbiyat newspaper was published on Thursday, 11th of Rajab 1314 AH, corresponding to 17th December 1896 CE. As was customary for pre-constitutional newspapers, the phrase “Bā ijāzah-i Vizārat-i Jalīlah-i Inṭibāʻāt” was printed in the corner of the newspaper’s masthead, and above the newspaper’s name, the phrase “Huva al-Muʻīn” was inscribed.
Tarbiyat, the first non-governmental newspaper in Iran, was published in Tehran from Thursday, 11th Rajab 1314 AH (1275 Solar Hijrī) until Thursday, 29th Muḥarram 1325 AH (29th Mihr 1286 Solar Hijrī).
Muḥammad Ḥasan Furūghī published the Tarbiyat newspaper in a very attractive manner with eloquent content. For example, with the financial support of Zayn al-ʻĀbidīn Taqīʹuf, one of the Azerbaijani notables and wealthy individuals of the Qājār era, an additional page was added to its contents.
The editorials of Tarbiyat repeatedly discussed the importance of sciences and education in the progress and advancement of nations and peoples. In the issues of the final year of the newspaper (1st Rabīʻ al-Avval 1324 AH – 29th Muḥarram 1325 AH), which coincided with the Constitutional Revolution, the declaration of the constitution, and the opening of the Majlis-i Shūrā-yi Millī, important news and information about the events of those days were published.
Articles with titles such as “Taḥqīq dar Tārīkh-i Dawlat-i Mashrūṭah va…”, “Favāʼid-i Majlis-i Shūrā-yi Millī”, “Salṭanat-i Mashrūṭah va Istibdādīyah”, and “Vaẓāʼif-i Majlis va Ḥudūd va Ḥuqūq-i Ān” were featured. In this regard, Tarbiyat played an important role in educating Iranians and preparing them for the Constitutional Revolution.
