Ṣūr-i Isrāfīl newspaper was founded in Ṭihrān under the directorship of Mīrzā Jahāngīr Khān Shīrāzī and Mīrzā Qāsim Khān Tabrīzī, and it was published in the year 1325 Hijrī Qamarī. The first issue of Ṣūr-i Isrāfīl, comprising eight pages in the “wazīrī” format with metal-type printing at the (Pārsiyān) press, was released on Thursday, 17 Rabīʿ al-Ākhir 1325 Hijrī Qamarī, corresponding to 14 Dey 1276 Yazdigardī Pārsī and 30 May 1907. Publication remained at the discretion of the management, whether to print or not.
Ṣūr-i Isrāfīl newspaper is one of the important papers established at the dawn of Iran’s Mashrūṭiyat (Constitutional Revolution), which, through its critical platform and approach, made a significant contribution to the awakening and freedom of Iranians. Published weekly, Ṣūr-i Isrāfīl was a political, historical, and ethical newspaper, and most of its editorials concerned political affairs and strongly criticised the despotic conditions at court. In terms of its innovative style of modern Persian prose, featured in a special column titled “Charand-u Parand” by Dekhū, there has been nothing quite like it in Persian-language journalism so far.
Browne, the well-known orientalist, in volume four (p. 315, in translation) of his work on Iranian literature, regarded Ṣūr-i Isrāfīl as one of the best and most useful newspapers to appear after the revolution—particularly because of its “Charand-u Parand” columns, in which numerous fine and valuable examples of Persian prose are included.
