Sample Issue

The newspaper Nidāʹyi Vaṭan was established in Tehran under the management of Majd al-Islām Kirmānī and was published in 1324 AH. The first issue was printed and distributed on Thursday, 11 Dhū al-Qaʻdah 1324 AH, corresponding to 27 December 1906 and 11 Dīʹ 828 in the Jalālī calendar. Prior to the approval of the press law, newspaper publication was subject to the permission of the Grand Vizier and the Shah himself. For this reason, the first issue of Nidāʹyi Vaṭan included the exact decree of the Grand Vizierate and Muẓaffar al-Dīn Shah regarding the printing and distribution of the newspaper.

Nidāʹyi Vaṭan was printed using lead type in various printing houses, including Maṭbaʻahʹyi Sharqī and others. Initially, it was printed once a week on Thursdays and distributed on Fridays. (The newspaper’s masthead stated that four copies were printed monthly, and one book was also presented to subscribers.) The newspaper’s office was initially located at Maṭbaʻahʹyi Sharqī, where the newspaper was also distributed. The annual subscription rates were: Tehran 25 qirān, other protected territories 3 tūmān, in the Ottoman Empire and Egypt 4 majīdī, in America and Europe 14 francs, Russia and the Caucasus 8 manāt, and in India 12 rupees. The price of a single copy was 300 dīnār. The cost of advertisements was one qirān per line, reduced to ten shāhī for repeated insertions.
At the top of the newspaper’s name, Nidāʹyi Vaṭan, the phrase “Ḥubb al-vaṭan min al-īmān” (Love of the homeland is part of faith) was printed, and below it, the phrase “Hal min nāṣir yanṣurunī” (Is there any helper to help me?) along with the words “Āzādī, Ābādī” (Freedom, Prosperity).
