Nāmah-i Tamaddun (Pahlavī I&II)

Nāmah-i Tamaddun (Letter of Civilisation) is a Persian-language periodical published in Mashhad, representing a significant regional journal of the Pahlavi era. The first series appeared in Isfand 1309 (March 1931) under the management of Sayyid ʻAlī Tamaddun-i Khurāsānī, a prominent figure in the cultural and intellectual life of Khurāsān. Twelve issues were published in the first year before the journal ceased. Eclectic in scope, it combined political commentary, scientific writing, literary criticism, and social analysis — a format characteristic of the reformist press of early Pahlavi Īrān. Following ʻAlī Tamaddun’s sudden death in spring 1329 (1950), his brother Aḥmad Tamaddunī assumed the licence and revived the journal. The second series commenced in Mihr 1330 (October 1951) and continued until 1333 (1954). Both series are preserved here, providing scholars with a sustained record of provincial intellectual life in Mashhad across two periods of modern Iranian history.
