Khāṭirāt-i Amān Allāh Zandish: az mujāhidīn-i Jangal

The memoirs of Amān Allāh Zandish offer a rare and significant primary source regarding the Jangal Movement (Nahz̤at-i Jangal) in Gīlān, Īrān. Unlike many historical accounts generated by the political elite or leadership circles of the insurgency, this narrative presents the perspective of a rank-and-file fighter (mujāhid) who joined Mīrzā Kūchak Khān as a teenager. The text, edited by Hūman Yūsufdahī, preserves the author's original colloquialisms and dialectal features, offering valuable linguistic insights alongside historical data. It covers the daily struggles of the guerrillas, the internal conflicts that plagued the movement in its final years, and the eventual reintegration of its members into society under the centralizing efforts of the Pahlavī state. Zandish also details his subsequent career in the police force (Shahrbānī), providing a continuity of social history from the late Qājār period through the reign of Riz̤ā Shāh.
