حکومت صفوی، یکی از پادشاهیهای متمرکز در ایران از زمان حملۀ عربها و ترکها به سرزمین ایران محسوب میشود که از ۹۰۷ تا ۱۱۴۸ هجری قمری (۱۵۰۱ تا ۱۷۳۶ میلادی) بر ایران فرمانروایی کرد. این پادشاهی را شاه اسماعیل اول از نوادگان شیخ صفیالدین اردبیلی، پیر طریقت صوفیه، در تبریز بنیان گذاشت. از مشخصههای مهم و تأثیرگذار این حکومت در تمام تاریخ ایران پس از آن، تغییر مذهب ایرانیان از تسنن به شیعۀ دوازده امامی به کمک نیروهای قزلباش خود بود. رسمی کردن مذهب تشیع دوازده امامی موجب تحول اساسی در ارزشها و هنجارهای جامعه شد. کتاب نامداران دوره صفوی زندگی دو تن از فقهای شیعۀ این دوره یعنی محمدباقر بن محمد میرداماد و محمد بن حسین شیخ بهائی را شرح داده است.
