جنگ چریکی یکی از قدیمی‌ترین شیوه‌های جنگی در طی سالیان گذشته در میان ملت‌ها بوده است. این روش در تاکتیک‌ها و تکنیک‌های نیروهای نظامی نقش مهمی را ایفا می‌کرده و از این رو آشنایی و یادگیری جنگ چریکی یکی از طرق و وسایل مقابله با این پدیده می‌باشد. جنگ چریکی یا جنگ نامنظم یکی از متداول‌ترین و قدیمی‌ترین شیوه از جنگ‌ها به شمار می‌رود که طی سالیان سال در فتح و تصرف شهرها و کشورها موثر واقع شده است. برخی از ارتش‌های پیشرفته در زمان حال جهت رسیدن به اهداف نظامی خود از این شیوه قدیمی و کارساز بهره گرفته‌اند. از دیدگاه برخی از تاریخ‌شناسان کلمه پارتیزان یک کلمه قدیمی است که قدمتی ۳۰۰۰ ساله دارد. بسیاری معتقدند که منظور از این کلمه قوم پارت و بعضی دیگر آن را به مفهوم رزمنده جنگجو تشبیه کرده‌اند. اما در فرهنگ لغت فرانسه نیز کلمه part به مفهوم رزمنده چریک ارائه شده است. تشابه کلمات نشان می‌دهد که صحت و قدمت چریک‌ها بسیار کهن و باستانی است.
