Shafaq-i Surkh, Rūznāmah-i (Qājār, Pahlavi I) – Collection of 15 years, including 2618 issues

The newspaper Shafaq-i Surkh was established in Tehran under the management of Mr ʻAlī Dashtī and was published in the year 1300 of the Solar Hijri calendar. The first issue of Shafaq-i Surkh was released on 11 Isfand 1300 SH, and during its first, second, and third years, the newspaper was published thrice weekly. From Saturday, 22 Āzar 1304 SH, towards the end of its third year, the newspaper became a daily, publishing five issues per week.

The first year of Shafaq-i Surkh's publication concluded on 11 Ḥūt 1301 SH. The newspaper then suspended publication for a week to reorganise its internal affairs, resuming publication the following Sunday, which marked the beginning of its second year.

The newspaper Īrān, dated 24 Ḥūt 1301, wrote an article titled 'The Second Year of Shafaq-i Surkh Newspaper', which stated: 'The esteemed Shafaq-i Surkh newspaper has begun its third issue of the second year. When we review the past year of this publication, we observe a scholarly and meritorious spirit in its articles, style, and approach. Shafaq-i Surkh has been among the newspapers whose writer has consistently maintained his intellectual foundation, style, and approach towards individuals and beliefs at the time of publication. For this reason, Shafaq-i Surkh has attracted the attention and interest of scholars, and we hope it will render greater services in the coming year. We wish Mr Dashtī success.'

Indeed, as expressed in the Īrān newspaper, the main purpose of Shafaq-i Surkh's editorials was to generate intellectual revolutions and stimulate the spirit and awakening of society. In his articles, Mr Dashtī endeavoured to promote Western civilisation and to familiarise people with the progress and advancements of the present era.

Shafaq-i Surkh was one of the few newspapers that effectively influenced people's thinking. Mr Dashtī's captivating and incisive pen played a significant role in opposing the governments of the time. The newspaper's sharp and penetrating articles led to its suspension several times, followed by subsequent republications.

In 1301 SH, during Qavām al-Salṭanah's cabinet, Shafaq-i Surkh, like other periodicals, was suspended and later republished.
