Balūchistān-i Īrān

This regional study introduces the south-eastern Iranian province of Baluchistan, a vast and arid land stretching from the Makrān coast to the highlands of Taftān. Drawing the reader through its geography, the author surveys the counties and towns of the region, from Zāhidān and Chābahār to Sarāvān, Īrānshahr and Khāsh, before turning to the climate, natural resources, population and the ethnic tensions that have shaped its modern history. Successive chapters explore the customs and social life of the Baloch people, their language, dress, music, beliefs and proverbs, alongside the handicrafts, jewellery and decorative arts for which the region is celebrated. The book closes with an affectionate account of Baluch cuisine, the many uses of the date, and the distinctive fruits of the province. Warm in tone yet grounded in observation, it offers an accessible portrait of a proud people and a striking corner of Īrān too often overlooked.
